Research: the effects of TMG supplementation on body composition and performance

A recent study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition examined the effects of chronic TMG (trimethylglycine) supplementation on body composition and performance in female students with no prior experience in structured resistance training. The aim of the study was to determine whether TMG, a supplement known for its ability to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass in men, has the same effects on women.

Research design

The study was conducted with 23 young women (average age 21 years), who were randomly assigned to a TMG group or a placebo group. The women followed a resistance training program for eight weeks, performing various exercises three times a week. The TMG group received 2.5 grams of TMG supplements daily, while the placebo group did not receive any active substances.

Results

The study found significant improvements in body composition and performance for both groups, but the group that received TMG supplements had greater benefits in terms of fat loss. The main results were:

  • Decrease in body fat percentage: The TMG group lost an average of 3.3% body fat, compared to a decrease of 1.7% in the placebo group.
  • Fat mass loss: The TMG group lost an average of 2.0 kg of fat mass, while the placebo group lost only 0.8 kg.
  • Increase in muscle mass: Both groups saw an increase in lean mass, but the improvements were slightly more pronounced in the TMG group.

Although significant changes in fat loss were observed, the study showed no significant increase in muscle strength in the TMG group compared to the placebo group. This means that while TMG may be effective in reducing body fat, it has less impact on absolute strength gain.

Conclusion

The results of this study suggest that TMG supplementation may help improve body composition by reducing fat mass, especially in combination with resistance training. The research shows that TMG can be a valuable supplement for women who want to lower their body fat percentage without losing muscle mass.

For women who strive for an improved body composition, TMG can be an effective supplement to a training program focused on fat loss and muscle retention.

Key points:

  • TMG significantly reduces fat mass in women who engage in resistance training.
  • The supplement has less effect on absolute strength increase.
  • TMG can be a useful addition for women who want to improve their body composition.

Conclusion:

TMG supplementation offers great potential for women who want to reduce their body fat percentage while maintaining muscle mass. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term effects of TMG in different populations.
